Urban Development

As a consequence of the accelerated growth of the tourism industry in Tulum, the city is expanding at great speed. Despite the existence of an Urban Development Program, there is no capacity to monitor its compliance and, therefore, growth occurs in a chaotic way, implying a strong impact on the fragile coastal ecosystems.

The Tren Maya project will involve greater growth in the city but also an opportunity for investment in public services and to update and apply new urban guidelines.

Faced with this complex issue, we are proposing 2 strategies. The first is to participate in all urban planning spaces at the state and municipal level, such as the Urban Development Program (PDU), the Local Ecological Order Program (POEL) and the Mayan Train.

The second strategy is to hold an annual exhibition that promotes the use of sustainable construction technologies. The first edition of Tulum Expo Construcción Sostenible (TECS) was held in 2019. The second edition, scheduled for April 2020, was postponed due to the health situation generated by Covid-19.

In the month of April 2019, the first Expo was held at the Casa de la Cultura, which convened a wide audience, which showed various technologies and contributed many experiences and ideas. From there arose the basis of a working group and the idea of holding TECS once a year was realized.

We are currently working on the organization of the second edition of TECS, expect more details soon …
