Touristic and Economic Development

Tulum’s economy is exclusively dependent on tourism. From a sustainability point of view, this dependence is not healthy. On the other hand, an integration of the different socioeconomic zones that make up the municipality has not been achieved. The lack of vision and the lack of planning to integrate the peasant communities of the Mayan zone as food providers for the huge market that the city of Tulum represents and the tourist services on the coast is striking.

Mercado Maya

In order to ensure that tourist activities have a direct benefit for the Mayan communities, we are working on the Mayan Market project, an initiative that has managed to involve the City Council and that has opened sales spaces for more than 90 families of agricultural and livestock producers. handcrafted.

The huge market for the supply of the population, hotels and restaurants is an opportunity to boost the economy of the Mayan communities and link them with coastal tourism development. With this project, it has been possible to open a sales space for producers in the Mayan area of the municipality.

To date, 12 editions of the Market have been presented on the dome of the esplanade of the municipal seat, the first Sundays of each month, starting in February 2019.

The project has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Tulum City Council and civil organizations as well as the support of private initiative.
